The history of Girard, a quiet farming community, and how it was transformed by the showman Dan Rice, impacted by the Erie Canal and remembered for its role in the abolitionist movement.

These Nazis were caught and put on trial for war crimes against humanity and for their respective roles as Hitler's successor, deputy, propaganda publisher, and Governor-General of occupied Poland.

First session, on August 3, will be held at the Jefferson Society. Second session, on August 10, class will be a private tour of the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown, NY.

Students are responsible for their own transportation. Steve Massa, B.S., instructor. Cost is $25 per person or $40 with a guest.

While our region has plentiful water supplies, it faces significant water quality challenges. Land use has compromised water quality and has caused more frequent flooding events. Without more attention to protection and restoration of water resources, future generations may not have access to abundant and clean water.

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns returns to Chautauqua Institution during Week Seven’s examination of “Sacred Spaces.” Burns will give Tuesday’s morning lecture on architecture, with an emphasis on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as a special Wednesday evening presentation in the Amphitheater on battlefields, with emphasis on the Civil War.

Burns has been making films for more than 30 years. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. The late historian Stephen Ambrose said of his films, "More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source."

On Sunday August 15th the 1st Annual "Blues for Shoes" benefit will be held at the BayBreeze Lounge located on the corner of E. 10th and French St. This event will feature 4-5 local bands and performers each playing 40-45 minutes. There is a $5 cover charge for the event. All proceeds will be used to help families with back to school needs such as clothing, shoes, supplies, and other things. People who attend and donate school supplies such as a pack of pencils, pens, or notebook will receive $1 off the cover at the door. Come enjoy some good live music and support a worthy cause.
