Lots going on right now--I'm sharing some of the stuff I've come across recently and would like to continue to bundle items like this into occasional emails for the local peace & justice community.
Barack Obama signed NDAA on New Years Eve (protest at offices of congressmembers, write letters to editor, call talk radio, donate to ACLU, tie it to Gitmo, make some noise about this ugly thing).

Middle Class Needs Better Support to Remain Nation' s Economic Engine

[A shortened version of this also appeared on Jan 24, 2012 as an Op-Ed in Erie Times News' Opinion Pages/Another View]

President Barack Obama invoked the spirit of Teddy Roosevelt before an audience in Kansas in December that “Government should help level the playing field to create equal opportunities”.  This is profoundly important for America's future and for its middle class which needs to remain the engine of our nation's economic prosperity.

Bain Capitalism Is About Profits Not Job Creation

Mitt Romney, the front-runner Republican candidate for President, recently boasted about his record on job creation; this brought up his tenure as CEO of Bain Capital, a Private Equity firm, to the forefront of the national debate. Not only his mixed record on job creation at Bain was attacked by other Republican candidates and Democrats alike, but more importantly the nature and role of Private Equity, leverage buyouts and venture capitalism was put in question.

On the proposed closing of the Erie Mail Processing Facility

On Dec. 5, the U.S. Postal Service requested an advisory opinion from the U. S. Postal Regulatory Commission on a proposed service change that would eliminate overnight mail service for significant portions of first-class mail and periodicals.

Redistricting plan marginalizes Erie

The redistricting plan for congressional districts in Pennsylvania marginalizes Erie.

Following the 2010 census, redistricting was necessary and Pennsylvania is losing a seat, but this could have easily been done without splitting Erie County, home of the state's fourth-largest city.

For the first time, Erie County will be split into two congressional districts, and Millcreek Township into two districts. This means that we have less of a voice. Our poverty rates are the highest in the state and our voice is being marginalized by a gerrymandering approach to redistricting.

Tax-cut myths still prevail

The notion that cutting taxes for top earners spurs growth because they create jobs is flawed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Tax Policy Center, for the period 1950-2010, higher employment growth occurred during years with higher top tax rates than during the last decade when we've had some of the lowest tax rates in 60 years.

The correlation between employment growth and tax rates seems very small, if any.
