Love Canal marked the beginning of the environmental health movement in
Western NY and across the country. Thirty years ago on August 2, 1978,
the NYS Department of Health declared a State of Emergency at Love
Canal, closed the 99th Street School and ordered a cleanup plan be
undertaken immediately. The agency recommended pregnant women and
children under two living near the leaking Love Canal toxic dump should
move. More relocations followed in response to this legendary
grassroots community struggle which sparked the creation of the Federal
Superfund program.
The Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ), Citizens'
Environmental Coalition, WNYCOSH, WNY Peace Center and the Love Canal
Medical Fund invite you to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Love Canal
as we continue the journey to prevent harm to our families from toxic
chemicals in our homes, schools, and communities in WNY and across the
country.
