Lots going on right now--I'm sharing some of the stuff I've come across recently and would like to continue to bundle items like this into occasional emails for the local peace & justice community.
Barack Obama signed NDAA on New Years Eve (protest at offices of congressmembers, write letters to editor, call talk radio, donate to ACLU, tie it to Gitmo, make some noise about this ugly thing).

Upcoming in January:

Sometime in January, Frankie & May Fresh Grocer will open at 12th & Peninsula with their emphasis on local and sustainable foods. You can listen to an interview with them here, http://www.wqln.org/main/Radio/Weekend%20All%20Things%20Erie/default.aspx and check them out on Facebook.
To keep up with the stream of ideas, news, events, songs, etc from the Occupy movement, check out Greg Mitchell's daily blog at The Nation http://www.thenation.com/blogs/greg-mitchell
On the tenth anniversary of Guantanamo, I would like to share my five-star rating of Karen Greenberg's "Least Worst Place: Guantanamo's First 100 Days", which describes the first 100 days of Gitmo and little-known account of the commander who tried his best to make it adhere to Geneva conventions, military protocol and human decency. Also describes Rumsfeld hand-picking Erie County Judge Michael Dunlavey to change it into the exact opposite. http://www.amazon.com/Least-Worst-Place-Guantanamos-First/dp/0195371887
#OccupyYoungstown is right on top of this injection wells-fracking-earthquake stuff along with foreclosure actions. Recognized on the Maddow blog: http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/02/9892737-occupy-fracking-earthquake-edition

"Torture? It Probably killed more Americans than 9/11" From 2009, important observation from a very respected source: "The use of torture by the US has proved so counter-productive that it may have led to the death of as many US soldiers as civilians killed in 9/11, says the leader of a crack US interrogation team in Iraq." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/torture-it-probably-killed-more-americans-than-911-1674396.html
